Hall of Fame baseball player Willie Mayshas died, the San Francisco Giants announced on social media. He was 93.

Known as the "Say Hey Kid" for the way he enthusiastically greeted others, Mays was a five-tool player with the rare ability to hit for power and for average while also excelling at running, throwing and fielding.

In 23 major league seasons, mostly with the New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants, he finished with 660 career home runs — then the second most behind legend Babe Ruth — and won 12 Golden Gloves. His dramatic, over-the-shoulder catch made running toward the center field wall during the 1954 World Series is considered one of the most celebrated plays in baseball history.

In 1979, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 2015, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, by President Barack Obama.
